The Mechanical Engineering Department, Jammu renders infrastructural support of Mechanical nature to all wings of Public Works Department like R&B, PHE, I&FC and other Engineering units of the Government Departments like Rural Development Department, Power Development Corporation, Railways etc.
The equipments are being deployed in far- flung areas like Doda and Rajouri besides Udhampur and Kathua. The department is an important partner in the execution of various development works.
In the modern age, the mechanized work is given preference over manual work. The department is in a position to help the R&B department in constructing roads in hilly areas where machines like Dozers and Rollers can undertake the road construction works quicker time. Similarly, department is in a position to help PHE Department in laying pipes besides, preparing trenches and digging out dug well etc.

Kashmir
Mechanical Engineering Department is a service department inherently playing the role of providing infrastructural facilities to all Engineering and Non Engineering Department engaged in development activities in the valley.
Present activities of the Mechanical Engineering Department are as under:-
- Procurement, operation and maintenance of road construction equipment and allied machinery.
- Undertaking of department works like fabrication of heavy steel structures, inspection and installation of boilers, procurement and installation of mechanical equipments in Non- Engineering Departments like Sericulture, Agriculture Hospitals and other Engineering services in associated hospital of Medical College Srinagar.
- Rendering service as Chief Inspector of Boilers in Kashmir province.
- Providing consultancy services to all departments regarding drawing of specifications of equipments of various types.
- Procurement and operation of Snow clearance equipment for Mechanized Snow clearance of roads in Kashmir valley.
